About
Statement
My work is rooted in the gestures and textures of the world. I am guided by the conflict between man-made industrial objects, disposable materials, and our stressed natural environment. I harness the energy of this conflict by transforming castaway physical objects like cd’s, construction site materials, nature bits, and rusty pieces of metal by using modeling paste, watercolor paint, earth pigments, ink, house wrap and wood panels in my artworks. By melding both traditional and non-traditional materials and methods my work becomes a time capsule from our present physical environment. Artmaking makes me slow down and see the world differently; it is an avenue to self discovery and creating a new kind of beauty.
What we see and take away from our world depends on our collected experiences. In my art I use things from my past and integrate them in rugged and rough textures. I’m not interested in making pretty pictures as much as I am in using the raw things that I see and feel. I see beauty in a chunk of rusted metal, broken asphalt, and in ripped water stained cardboard These sorts of things hold my attention. I don't know why I’m so attracted to them but I have to wonder if it is because I grew up and lived my life in the Chicago area. I saw the power of industry around me as I grew up. I remember looking into a building and seeing the hot fire of a blast furnace in a steel mill along the Chicago river and seeing the power of the gears of a weight-balanced bridge on the river downtown. As the world changes and we are becoming more technological and less big industry, those old factory buildings are but relics of the past. As technology is more constant in our lives the speed of change gets faster and faster. Take CDs for example, at one time they were thought to be the height of technology and now they are obsolete. To me they offer a non-traditional material to be added to artwork and seen in a new light.
